After getting to know Layton while he built my sister-in-law's house and seeing his way of working and the finished product, it was a no-brainer to hire him to build our home around the corner. Layton builds great looking, well-designed, and beautifully finished homes - you can feel the quality immediately upon walking through the front door. Layton loves what he does and it shows in his work, from his old school pencil and paper designs to his attention to detail and customer service. He was almost always available to talk through an issue or walk through an idea and he still drops by occasionally to deliver some fresh eggs and make sure everything is still good. We loved working with Layton Wheeler! Layton is a North Carolina native and has been building in Chapel Hill/Carrboro for 20+ years. He was the builder and the designer/architect of our project. He does very high quality work, manages all the subcontracting, is very “hands on,” is very careful about project costs, and is fun to work with. We actually worked with Layton to build three structures on our lot (our main house, a small rental/guest house, and a garage with apartment), and now a couple other families have toured our houses and have signed on with Layton to build their own. At all stages along the way, Layton was good at communicating what was going on and involving us in decision-making. He also carefully monitored the budget to ensure that the choices we made (e.g., picking, tiles, fixtures, etc) stayed within the projected cost. We were referred to Layton Wheeler by several employees at our local hardware store. We had seen a property he built in Carrboro and thought it was lovely. When we called Layton, he was extremely nice and offered for us to come view the property he was working on. When we met with him and saw the house, we were so impressed. The detail he put into everything was incredible and the house was beautiful. After hearing from several references how happy they were both working with Layton and the finished product, we decided to hire him as our contractor to build an addition onto our existing two bedroom home. From the very beginning, we felt Layton kept us informed and took the time to make sure things were being done the way we wanted them to be. From picking out the windows to the flooring to the tile and everything along the way, he helped us make informed decisions. Being 8 months pregnant from the time we started building, Layton worked with us to ensure he was not in the way or disruptive to our day to day schedule. I used Layton Wheeler to build my custom home which was completed about 18 months ago. I cannot recommend Layton highly enough. I had a rough sketch of what I wanted and Layton fleshed out the details and made certain things work that I could not envision. His sketches were beautiful and obviated the need for an architect. Then, the two of us proceeded together to build the most beautiful home I could imagine. I had a number of pretty "out there" ideas, including, but not limited to, a floating copper breakfast bar and Layton made these things happen. He is an utter delight to work with, enthusiastic about new and unusual things, creative, and a true man of his word.
